Hi, there! I’m Jason, a proud member of the “SMEEKS” (Social Media Geeks) here at The Bowen Group. Most days, you will find me at my desk, browsing the latest memes on Facebook, checking out the trending hashtags on Twitter and admiring the freshest military photos on Instagram. Seriously. I get paid to do this.

Why, you may ask? 2.8 billion consumers, that’s why. As you may have heard, social media is kind of popular these days. So, if you have a product or service to promote, you better believe you’re going to be doing it on social media. Which leads me to my next topic: solving business problems and taking advantage of the newest capabilities on social media.

It’s what we do. For example, on one of our current contracts, we faced the following challenge: how could we include massive amounts of information in a single Facebook cover photo (851px wide by 315 px tall) without it looking like a jumbled mess? The answer: Facebook cover videos — one of the newest features available to pages on Facebook.

By converting the standard static cover photo into a motion video, we enabled our clients to include all the information they needed, while also creating an engaging piece of content for fans to share. According to recent studies, social video generates 1,200 percent more shares than text and images combined, and on average, viewers retain 95 percent of a message when they watch it in a video — compared to 10 percent when reading it in text. Keeping track of stats like this, and putting them to good use for the benefit of our clients, is part of what we do.

New features are released every day on social media, and our “SMEEK” team is working hard to develop strategies, tactics and techniques that take full advantage of these new opportunities to reach your fans. So remember, the next time you’re in the office, and you see one of us eagerly browsing a feed of cute military puppy photos on Instagram, gently pat us on the back and say “Keep up the great work!”
